There is no subscribing for free yet.
WHEN there are 2000+ paying subscribers the people who were among the first 1000 paying subscribers will start subscribing for free, as the number of subscribers increase.

Example: John Doe reports his interest to subscribe, and I report back that he is number 177 on my list (176 people reported their interest to subscribe before him). When number 1200 reports his/her interest the subscription starts, and John Doe pays 2 dollars per month to subscribe, together with everyone else. Time passes, and eventually 2230 people subscribe to MonstersByEmail. At that point in time (if it comes), John Doe begins to subscribe for free. His subscription will remain free for as long as 2177 or more people subscribe.

See? From the moment you report your interest to subscribe, 2000 more people must join, and you must subscribe from the moment the subscription begins, to keep your place/number in the list. Only then, will you have a chance to subscribe for free... eventually. NOT from scratch.

If you promise to subscribe for the first period ($8), probably starting some time in 2013, you can.
