Since some people don't click the links, I will add these step-by-steps to Deviant Art as well. Perhaps a few more can benefit from them that way.

However, if you want more creature design insight, print-resolution creature art, or RPG-friendly stats and descriptions to your creatures, I suggest you check out MonstersByEmail. com. [link]

I hear they virtually give away the reproduction rights...

BIG thanks for all the creature tutorials - they really help a lot to see your process!

its a very good process.

tiny question - how does it avoid slipping and sliding (of the forelegs) on any surface - the hooks/toes appear to point upwards.

Hehe. You might be right there.. we shall have to surmise there is a slightly softer and rough surface in the bend of those front legs. Mountain goats do really well with tiny hooves... (best I can do ;)...)

my original thought was "is it inspired by giant sloths and terrestrial (nonhuman) primates?" (neither group walks on the flat of their hands - the ground sloths didn't even walk on the flat of their feet)

best of luck in the future to you.

Great descriptions on each picture - nothing too wordy. Thanks for posting this!

This is an absolutely fantastic tutorial and look into lighting and shading. It's a great look into making any design more realistic.
